Jais Nielsen (Danish,1885 -1961) The Judas Kiss. Sketch for sculpture. Dimensions: 9 x 13 inches without frame. 17 x 22 inches with frame. Description: Pencil and charcoal on paper. Signed Jais and dated 17 to the lower right and titled ( Judaskysset / The Judas Kiss to the lower left. This particular work was painted by Jais Nielsen in 1917 while he was employed as a sculptor at the G.A. Eifrig pottery factory from 1915-1918. This watercolor is the ealiest version of the famous Jais Nielsens Judas series. He made another Judas kiss sketch for ceramic plate in 1919 and later used a similar Judas kiss image for his famous 1922 (Krigervasen) The Warrior Vase, while employed at the Copenhagen porcelain factory.
