Sælges online for 1750 EUR About the work This 1958 vintage print comes from the double issue of Verve a Parisian art journal seeking to bring the works of the emergent Modernist and Surrealist painters to a wider public. The Verve Review was a purposefully luxurious magazine and ran from 1937 to 1960, only 38 editions were published due to the high degree of design and editorial work dedicated to each issue. The 1958 edition was devoted entirely to the last works of Henri Matisse, 1950-1954. In his introductory note to this edition the Verve’s publisher Teriade wrote: “Reproduced by colour lithography they were done in gouache on paper which the artist cut out with scissors and pasted onto other paper. They are accompanied by drawings from the same period or earlier. Matisse did the cover expressly for this issue. The first lithograph plates were printed under his supervision in 1954. The lithography is by Mourlot Frères, photogravure and typography by the master printer, Draeger Frères. Printed July 28, 1958.” This is a 1958 vintage print and should not be confused with later reproductions.
