Han var en af de førende repræsentanter for nordlig manerisme. Pierre de Jode, kendt som den ældste eller den gamle, var en flamsk gravør, der producerede et stort antal tryk baseret på italienske renæssancemestre. Han var far til gravøren og kunsthandleren Pieter de Jode den Yngre.

Bartholomus Spranger Holy Family Etching

This etching, attributed to Pieter I De Jode (c1570-1634), is a reproduction of a work by the Flemish Mannerist painter, draughtsman and engraver Bartholomus Spranger (1546-1611). This plate was formerly ascribed to the artist Hendrick Goltzius and comes from an original plate from 16th Century Antwerp. The print is in excellent condition, devoid of the two worm holes typically found at the bottom of prints of this type. Printed in black ink on laid paper, it presents an image of the Holy Family, with the Virgin Mary cradling the Christ Child. The overall size of the plate is 22cm x 16.5cm. This is an excellent example of a quality European etching, featuring a rich design in high relief and a powerful composition which brings a sense of drama and awe. It has been professionally stored throughout its history in a frame to retain its colour and tonal depth.
