The drawing was part of a small series of ink drawings that Alf Refer made after visiting a Henri Gaudier-Brzeska exhibition in London in 1938. It was most likely the Henri Gaudier-Brzeska exhibition that took place at Zwemmer Gallery in London ( 6 December 1938 - 17 January 1939) Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915) was a French artist and sculptor, known for his primitive style carvings and expressionist naked twisted body shapes. He was killed in action, at age 23 during the First World War in Belgium.
