Kunisadas billeder afspejler kulturen i Japan i årene op til landets åbning mod Vesten. Hans første bogillustrationer blev udgivet i 1807, hans første skuespillerportræt året efter, sammen med teatralske scener og kurtisaner, var yakusha-e hans foretrukne genre midt i al hans populære og omfattende produktion. Da han malede rigtig mange af disse, fortsatte sin lærers stærke realisme, erhvervede han sig nøgterne 'Yakusha-e no Kunisada' – Kunisada, skuespilleren maler. Fra 1830 fortsatte han udviklingen af Utagawa-skolen, og fra 1844 og frem underskrev han hans værker Toyokuni III.
