Et sjældent brev fra forfatteren Henry Hallam vippede ind på forsiden Henry Hallam FRS FRSE FSA FRAS (9. juli 1777 – 21. januar 1859) var en engelsk historiker. Uddannet ved Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, praktiserede han som advokatfuldmægtig på Oxford-kredsløbet i nogle år, før han vendte sig til historien. Hans hovedværker var Udsigt over Europas tilstand under middelalderen (1818), Englands forfatningshistorie (1827) og Introduktion til Europas litteratur i det femtende, sekstende og syttende århundrede (1837). Selvom han ikke selv tog del i politik, var han godt bekendt med den gruppe af forfattere og politikere, der ledede Whig-partiet. I en gennemgang af Constitutional History fra 1828 hævdede Robert Southey, at arbejdet var partisk til fordel for whigs. Hallam var stipendiat i Royal Society og en trustee af British Museum. I 1830 modtog han guldmedaljen for historie grundlagt af George IV.
