12 Years a Slave is an American historical drama film directed by Steve McQueen and released in 2013. The film is based on the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. The film received critical acclaim, with particular praise for Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance as Solomon Northup, and for its powerful and moving storytelling. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
