Alf Egon Refer (Danish, 1909 - 1997) Back View of Standing Male model. Ode to Gaudier-Brzeska Dimensions: 13 x 16 inches inclusive the frame. Description: Ink on brown paper. Signed Alf Refer to the lower left and dated: 3-2-38. Meaning 3rd February 1938. Fine expressionist depiction of a standing male model viewed from the back. The drawing was part of a small series of ink drawings that Alf Refer made after visiting a Henri Gaudier-Brzeska exhibition in London in 1938. It was most likely the Henri Gaudier-Brzeska exhibition that took place at Zwemmer Gallery in London ( 6 December 1938 - 17 January 1939) Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915) was a French artist and sculptor, known for his primitive style carvings and expressionist naked twisted body shapes. He was killed in action, at age 23 during the First World War in Belgium.
