Talentfuld som barn blev han omkring tretten år elev af Tokyos dengang førende trykkeri, Utagawa Kunisada. Hans dybe påskønnelse og kendskab til kabuki-drama førte til, at han primært producerede ukiyo-e-skuespillertryk, som er træbloktryk af kabuki-skuespillere og scener fra datidens populære skuespil.

This is an original Japanese woodblock print from 1865. It depicts scenes from the kabuki play 'Momochidori Sakigake Soga', written by Toyohara Kunichika. The print is an example of yakusha-e, which are pictures of kabuki actors. The woodblock has the signature 'Toyohara Kunichika hitsu,'豐原国周筆. Toyohara Kunichika was a renowned artist who was a student of Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most successful woodblock artists in Tokyo at the time. The print is a rare example of Japanese printing art from the late Edo period. You can see this print on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
