DIY guide to a beautiful Ikea Trofast hack

Here you get Line Schjelde’s guide to how to build a beautiful desk for the children’s room, with plenty of storage space.

Together with her husband and two children, influencer and interior enthusiast Line Schjelde lives on 104 square meters centrally in Copenhagen. Since space quickly becomes tight in the old apartment, she is always looking for solutions that can free up space. Most recently, she built a desk for the children's room that offers plenty of storage space and is a cozy gathering point for her children, aged 3 and almost 6.

The first step is to find the right materialsIkea is well represented on resale platforms, so it is entirely natural to find the Trofast elements for the desk second-hand.

  • 2 x IKEA Trofast shelf, including shelves or storage boxes.
  • Sandpaper
  • Primer for wood
  • Paint
  • MDF board
  • Saw
  • Narrow strip to mount the shelves on the wall if you want them lifted off the floor
  • Drill and screws

This is how Line tackled the projectOnce you have all the necessary materials and are ready to execute the project, here is a guide on how you can approach it:

  • Start by assembling the shelves if they are not already assembled when you buy them second-hand.
  • Sand them down to remove any paint.
  • Paint the shelves with primer, and let them dry.
  • Once the primer is dry, they are ready for the first coat of paint (Line painted the desk with Hibiscus from Jotun Lady).
  • Apply another coat of paint when the first coat is dry.
  • If you want to make the desk wall-mounted, now install a small strip on the wall where the desk can rest for extra support.
  • Then mount the shelves on the wall.
  • Now cut the MDF board to size (you can ask the hardware store where you buy it to do this) so that it fits the desk. Remember that the tabletop should extend a couple of centimeters beyond the shelf on all free edges.
  • Mount the tabletop on top of the shelves, and screw it down through the tabletop, fastening it to the shelf modules at each corner.
  • Once the tabletop is mounted, sand the free edges to make them smooth.
  • Then paint the tabletop with primer, and once it is dry, it is ready to be painted with the same method as you painted the shelves.

    Decorating the desk

Decorating the deskNow you are ready to decorate the desk, and here Line also has great ideas for good second-hand finds.

For example, she found two old used stools, which have been given new life with a beautiful light blue paint (Childhood Memory from Dyrup). On the desk, suitcases and boxes add decoration while also making it easier to keep the children's many toys organized, while a couple of used bookshelves hold the children's favorite books. As extra details, Line has added a lovely patchwork wall hanging, a Babar poster, and a desk lamp.
