Kaare Lem: Der einäugige König Christian IV
Kaare Lem ( Danish, 1944 - 2013) The one-eyed Danish King Christian in sea battle. Dimensions: 24 x 32 inches Description: Oil on canvas. Signed Kaare and titled with Christian IV's crowned monogram: C4. Huge impressive modernist portrayal of the famous Danish king: Christian IV (1577 –1648). The portrait shows the famous moment when Christian IV lost his eye in a sea battle with the Swedes at Kolberger Heide in 1 July 1644. Christian IV stood on the quarterdeck of his ship, the Trinity, when a Swedish cannonball wounded the king in thirteen places, blinding one eye and flinging him to the deck. But he was instantly on his feet again, cried with a loud voice that it was well with him, and set everyone an example of duty by remaining on deck until the fight was over. A fine oil by modernist Danish painter, Kaare Lem ( Danish, 1944 - 2013).
