Enebæren er en yamadori, hvilket betyder, at den blev indsamlet fra naturen. Træet kom fra Itoigawa i Japans Niigata-præfektur. Donor Kenichi Oguchi, som drev en bonsai-planteskole kendt for sine smukt trænede enebær i nabobyen Okaya, begyndte at træne træet i 1905. Oguchis medarbejdere besøgte museet i 1977 for at demonstrere, hvordan man bruger ledninger til at bevare enebærens form.
